Gonsalves to Run for Re-Election

Norma Gonsalves, R-East Meadow, has been the legislator for the 13th legislative district since 1997.

Norma Gonsalves recently announced that she plans to run for re-election in November for an eighth term as legislator of Nassau County’s 13th District, which includes all of East Meadow and Salisbury, as well as parts of North Bellmore, North Merrick and Levittown.

Gonsalves, a resident of East Meadow, has been at her post for the past 14 years, and she says a lot has changed since she became legislator.

“I think a lot has changed,” Gonsalves said. “I have been instrumental in many projects, including the new veterans clinic at the [Nassau University] Medical Center.”

Gonsalves taught in the New York City school system for 25 years before turning her attention to government. She serves on committees, including those for Minority Affairs, Government Services and Operations, Education and Planning. Gonsalves received her Bachelor’s in History at St. Joseph’s College for Women and her Master’s Degree from Hunter College and Brooklyn College.

“I don’t like being called an elected official,” Gonsalves said. “I consider myself to be a public servant. I am here to serve the community.”

Gonsalves has also received honors since becoming legislator in 1997. She was named the 1999 woman of the year by the East Meadow Chamber of Commerce, and she was also honored by the Council of East Meadow Civic Association's (CEMCO) 25th anniversary ceremony in 2001. She was also presented in 1998 with a woman of distinction award from the New York State Senate.

Gonsalves says it’s “the little things” that indicate that she is doing a good job as legislator.

“I was marching in the East Meadow parade,” Gonsalves said. “People were calling my name. 'Norma! Norma! Norma! We appreciate everything you do.'”

Gonsalves stressed that she always has new objectives on her plate, which include the improvement of Nassau County's roads and the evolution of East Meadow Avenue into more of a "downtown" for local residents to enjoy.

"There's always more to be done," Gonsalves said. "I work every day, not only for the people of my district, but for the people of Nassau County."
