Flower Shop Of Farmingdale Named Best Florist On LI: 'It Is An Accomplishment'
"It's nice that people think that way of us," says owner Jeanette Zimmerman-Schmidt, who discussed what sets her shop apart from others.
FARMINGDALE, NY — Flower Shop of Farmingdale won best florist on Long Island for a second straight year in the Bethpage Best of Long Island Awards.
The flower shop, at 316 Main St., won the award for the first time in 2022. It wasted no time winning it second.
"It is an accomplishment," Jeanette Zimmerman-Schmidt, owner of the store, told Patch. "It’s nice that people think that way of us. It’s great to be a part of [Farmingdale Village]. Especially because the village just won best downtown also. We love to be a part of the community and that they appreciate us."

Zimmerman-Schmidt believes it is the effort of those who staff the shop that separates Flower Shop of Farmingdale from other florists on the island.
"We really, really try," she said. "We have a very fast turnover rate with our flowers, because we’re extremely busy. The flowers don’t sit here. They stay for about a day or two tops and they’re out the door so the customer gets to enjoy the flowers instead of them sitting here and breaking down."

Several other florists have won the award, which dates back to 2010. Zimmerman-Schmidt said her store was able to thrive during the tumultuous coronavirus pandemic, which is why the Farmingdale florist won back-to-back awards.
"People were not together, so they found sending flowers was a way to stay connected," she said. "I’m thinking that possibly, just because our delivery amounts increased every day, that maybe more people saw our work and it kind of contributed to people liking everything. It was just basically advertising on its own, because they got flowers and liked them."
The florist also sells chocolates, teddy bears, and balloons — items that Zimmerman-Schmidt called "gifty" and said are nice add-ons for flower arrangements.

The flower shop was established in 1984, and the florist deals in projects, weddings, events, and more, according to the Bethpage Best of LI page. The shop is open seven days a week.
"Thank you to everybody who voted for us and made us the best flower shop on Long Island!" Zimmerman-Schmidt said.
