The coronavirus pandemic has caused a surge in anxiety. John De George feels his hypnosis techniques can address depression.

FARMINGDALE, NY — John De George, a hypnotist with a practice in Farmingdale, aims to help his patients overcome anxiety, depression, and other hurdles by fostering self-empowerment. The coronavirus pandemic has caused further stress over the past couple of years, according to a news release.
De George, who owns JD Hypnosis at 81 Lawrence St., Farmingdale, is a member of the National Guild of Hypnotists. He has other practices at 7600 Jericho Turnpike suite C202, Woodbury, and 157 Deer Park Ave., Babylon.

De George said his services are more timely than ever, as the coronavirus pandemic has led to a 28 percent increase in major depressive disorders and a 26 percent increase in anxiety disorders worldwide, especially among women and younger people, according to Psychology Today.
Therapy with hypnosis can be an important & effective tool to help address anxiety and depression, according to De George. A key to coping better with stress is to learn how to think in a way that allows stressful triggers to be interpreted calmly.

Many with anxiety related to the coronavirus outbreak have been referred to counseling, according to the news release. Children and parents have struggled with online schooling, as people have missed in-person social interactions with their friends, according to De George.
Others have become frustrated and angry as a result of the COVID-19-imposed restrictions on their lives and are having difficulty in readjusting to personal interactions with their peers, De George said. Front-line workers have also experienced pandemic-related stress.
De George is one of about 10,000 members of the Guild of Hypnotists worldwide.
Each session ranges from 60 to 90 minutes, according to De George. His practice aims to help people dealing with anxiety, weight, self-esteem, confidence issues, public speaking, gambling, sleeping issues, and more.
