Bulldogs Wrestle Fourth Place at Locust Valley Tournament

Team members, some fighting injuries, show they aren't pushovers.

After coming off a disappointing performance on Friday night against Conference rival Plainedge — presently ranked fifth in dual matches in Nassau County — during which Hewlett only secured wins by Simon Greebel (pin), Owen Bachelder (decision), Rob Rosenberg (decision) and Troy Smith (pin), the team traveled to the north shore to compete at the Locust Valley Tournament this past Saturday.

One big positive for the Bulldogs was that All-County wrestler Bachelder returned from a month-long injury rehab on Friday night.

Although Hewlett did not have representatives in all 15 weight classes, the team once again demonstrated that they are no longer a Nassau County pushover. Leading the way to their fourth place finish out of 11 teams was senior captain Habner Sanchez, who took home the only first place finish for Hewlett. Following his lead, junior captain Greebel, Oren Revivo and senior captain Smith (who was wrestling through a significant elbow injury), all secured second place finishes.

Also finishing in the top six were Bachelder, junior captain Aaron Weinberg, junior captain Rosenberg, Tredd Smith, Justin Ciraolo and Lester Enriquez. Unfortunately for the Bulldogs, Bachelder tweaked his knee and had to bow out of his semi-final match. The team remains optimistic that he will be back on the mat this coming week. Wrestling with true determination were Andrew Regen-Tuero, Drew Beller and Josh Goldenberg.

The Bulldogs' schedule only gets more intense as they travel to conference rivals South Side on Wednesday and Friday at Division. With their Conference record currently standing at 1-2, the Bulldogs need wins over both of these teams to secure a better seeding placement in the upcoming county dual tournament scheduled for the last weekend in January.
