Cops: Hewlett Man Struck Twice, Killed in Hempstead
Pedestrian was crossing Peninsula Boulevard in Hempstead when he was struck twice Monday night, cops said.

A Five Towns man died after he was struck and killed by two oncoming cars in Hempstead Monday evening, according to Nassau County Police.
Detectives said John Santopolo, 65, of Hewlett, was trying to cross Peninsula Boulevard and South Franklin Avenue when he was struck by an oncoming car at 6:20 p.m. The force of the strike “propelled” Santopolo into the roadway where he was struck by a second unknown car, police said. The second car left the scene.

North Shore Ambulance rushed Santopolo to the hospital with “serious head and internal injuries,” police said. He was pronounced dead by a staff doctor at 7:10 p.m.

The driver of the first car was brought to a nearby hospital for unspecified pain. The driver also submitted to a preliminary breath test which produced no sign of intoxication, cops said. Their car, a 2011 Honda Crossover, was impounded for brake and safety checks.
No description of the second car was provided.
