Hazardous Waste Clean-Up To Start At Former Factory

Rockaway Metal Products occupied the site from approximately 1971 through 1987 and improperly stored or disposed of hazardous waste.

INWOOD, NY — A location of a former sheet metal fabrication factory is now the site of contamination clean-up.

The state Department of Environmental Conservation announced the next steps for the vacant 4.85-acre lot at 175 Roger Avenue in Inwood.

From 1971 to 1987, Rockaway Metal Products had property on the site. During that time, they improperly stored and disposed of hazardous waste at the site, the DEC said in a release.

Remedial actions for the Brownfield Site are expected to begin this month and last until April.

Among the steps being taken by the DEC include:

  • Removal of petroleum underground storage tanks
  • Removal of drywells contaminated with metals

The state will also excavate and dispose approximately 1,735 cubic yards of petroleum contaminated soil and treat the groundwater with organic compounds.

New York's Brownfield Cleanup Program encourages the voluntary cleanup of

contaminated properties known as "brownfields" so that they can be reused and redeveloped.
