Hewlett Softball Beats Lynbrook For Much Needed Victory
Bulldogs hope this win is enough to fuel a rally in the second half of the season.
Hewlett’s varsity softball team edged out a 4-3 victory in the bottom of the seventh inning Tuesday over the visiting Lynbrook Owls.
After the Lynbrook catcher's throwdown to third missed its mark on a steal attempt by sophmore Gabby Casanova, the Bulldogs scored a much needed game-winning run.
Samara Yegelwel’s two-run-homerun in the fourth inning, pushing Hewlett ahead 3–1, and Mackie Sperry’s well-pitched four-hitter were just a couple of the key contributions granting Hewlett their first league victory of the season. This win moves Hewlett to seventh in their division at the halfway point of the season, dropping Lynbrook's record this season to 2-4 overall.

Ricki Stumacher, senior and centerfielder for the Bulldogs, made a game-saving snag in the top of the third inning and also scored the Bulldog’s first run of the game after stealing both second and third bases in the bottom of the inning.
“I feel like we played really hard,” Stumacher said. “We were more into the game than usual, and we really didn’t make many mistakes.”

Her diving catch in the top of the seventh kept the game tied with a Lynbrook runner in scoring position, allowing Hewlett the chance to come back in the bottom of the inning to score the game-winning run.
“With a win under our belts, this is really going to build our confidence,” she added.
Several parents, siblings and team supporters were there despite the rainy conditions, cheering the Bulldogs to their second overall win of the year.
Bonnie Sperry, mother of the team’s starting pitcher Mackie Sperry, along with several other players' moms came out to support the girls.
“Not only are parents here to support their team, but they are also here to support the community,” Sperry said.
Hewlett’s coaches, Vinnie Lospinuso and Brett Kornblum, were both pumped to see their team finally starting to come together in the second half, especially after their shaky 1–5 start to the season.
“Our younger players are starting to get better and their hitting is getting better as well,” Lospinuso said. “Hopefully we can build off this win and get some momentum going.”
