Lawrence Girls Volleyball Heading Into Season With New Head Coach
The Golden Tornadoes finished with a 12-2 record in 2010.
The Lawrence girls volleyball team had an exceptional season in 2010, finishing with a 12-2 record. Due to the conference in which they were placed in, the Golden Tornadoes just missed the playoffs, as only the top team earned a berth.
Despite the result, Lawrence is preparing for a brand new season under first-year head coach David Mayerson, who graduated from the school in 2004. Mayerson helped win the program's lone Nassau County championship to date after an undefeated season.
“I want the team to be confident in what they are doing on and off of the court and I want them to believe that they know that they are good volleyball players,” Mayerson said. “I expect to do well and be competitive in every match and we are going to play the game the right way.”

Mayerson succeeds longtime Lawrence head coach Linda Masone.
With the team in good hands, the 2011 girls' squad will look to replace a handful of talent from last year, including Miriam Vainblat, Farah Devereaux and Jennifer Vacchio. Stepping into the leadership roles will be senior Michelle Vainblat and junior Natalie Leger.

“I hope that we will do a lot better with our new coach, so I think we can go far with that,” Vainblat said. “We are doing a lot more drills and working a lot harder. We are getting down to business now.”
Lawrence will have big goals ahead after a very promising season last year. The top competition for the Golden Tornadoes for this upcoming fall season figures to be Sewanhaka, Jericho, Great Neck North and Mepham.
The team is off to a great start this season, defeating Sewanhaka 3-0 last Wednesday and beating Carey 3-1 on Monday. Next up is Great Neck North on Wednesday and Glen Cove on Friday.
“There are three new teams in the conference so it’ll be interesting to see what the competition is there,” Leger, a junior, said. “Great Neck North is a pretty good team as well.”
Lawrence is scheduled to play their home opener on Saturday, Sept. 17 against Jericho at 11:30 a.m.
