Nassau Officer Subdued Violent, Unstable Man

With his safety on the line, the officer managed to keep a tense situation from turning violent.

A Nassau police officer subdued a violent and unstable man in Valley Stream Tuesday evening, de-escalating what could have been a bloody situation.

According to police, patrol officers responded to a home on Wheeler Avenue just before 5:15 p.m. for a call of a mentally unstable man. When they arrived, an officer found the man armed with a four-inch-long kitchen knife.

Police say the man lunged at the officer with the knife. The officer then started talking to the man to de-escalate the situation. The man lunged at the officer again, and a struggle ensued. The officer managed to subdue the man and place him under arrest.
