A two-alarm fire damaged a pizzeria, barber shop and beauty salon, as well as apartments above the businesses, fire officials say.
VALLEY STREAM, NY — Two people were displaced and several businesses were damaged after a two-alarm fire broke out in a row of Valley Stream businesses that didn’t have smoke detectors, fire officials said.
The Nassau County Fire Marshal’s office said Valley Stream firefighters were dispatched to a row of businesses on Rockaway Avenue Sunday at 5:25 p.m. Included in that row of businesses, fire officials said, was a pizzeria, a barber shop, a beauty salon and residential apartments above them all, fire officials said.
The fire quickly rose to a second-alarm status, with mutual aid coming from Elmont, Franklin Square, Hewlett, Lynbrook, Malverne, Rockville Centre and Woodmere fire departments, bringing the total firefighting presence above 100 firefighters. The fire was brought under control within 45 minutes with three people — two adult civilians and a fire chief — evaluated by EMS, fire officials said. None of the people were hospitalized, and the two civilians were displaced, fire officials said.
