Crime Down Despite Furor Over Muggings

COMPSTAT numbers indicate a dip in most criminal activity so far this year.

The start of a new year in Forest Hills also means the start of a new season in crime and crime prevention.

Already this year, the 112th Precinct has been

almost every crime currently, with a handful of notable exceptions, was trending downward.

According to the most recent numbers from the precinct, that trend has held through the first two weeks of 2011, despite the muggings that have so many on age.

Through the same period last year, three have been less overall robberies in the area — five in 2011 compared to more than twice that number, 11 — in 2010.

Grand larceny and stolen cars have also take a dip over the same period last year, with 16 incidents of grand larceny compared to 21 in the same two week period in 2010.

There have only been three cars reported stolen this year, as well, compared to five in 2010, a number that seems to indicate that increased efforts to tamp down auto thefts could be seeing some results.

Precincts are monitoring three new categories of crime across the city in COMPSTAT reports this year: petit larceny, misdemeanor assault and misdemeanor sex crimes.

So far this year, incidences of petit larceny have increased in the 112th Precinct. There have been 33 reported incidents of petit larceny this year, compared to 26 last year.

The most recent week on record for police, despite the uproar over the neighborhood muggings, turned out to be a very quiet one. There were no reported burglaries or felony assaults, and statistics also indicate there were no cars reported stolen.
