ODDLY NORMAL: One Family's Struggle to Help Their Teenage Son Accept His Own Sexuality

In 2009, John Schwartz got a call from his wife. Their thirteen year old son, Joe, was on his way to the hospital after a failed suicide attempt. Joe had finally mustered the courage to come out as gay to his classmates, who responded with great discomfort. Hours later, he tried to kill himself.

Oddly Normal is a personal story, written to help other parents of gay kids—and maybe, parents of any kid who is different, who is mistreated by others, or who just may not accept himself—to know that they can find their own way to help their child handle the pain that comes from not fitting in. John Schwartz is a national correspondent for The New York Times.
