Save a Life Today! Bone Marrow Drive on Ascan Ave.

Head to the Church in the Gardens to donate now!

Forest Hills residents looking for a good deed today should look no further than Until 2 p.m. Saturday, residents can participate in a bone marrow drive on behalf of Nora Getchell, a Long Island 6-year-old stricken with severe aplastic anemia.

The disease, which forces Nora to undergo weekly blood transfusions, can be cured with a bone marrow transplant.

The good news for Nora and her family — Nora’s aunt and uncle Amy and Matt Corrigan live in Forest Hills — is that she found a donor earlier this month. But there are thousands of other children just like her in need all across the country.

Signing up to donate takes less than 10 minutes — we just got back — and according to Nicole Brown of the New York Blood Center, donors who follow through on their commitment are saving lives.

The process is simple, four cheek swabs and you're done. Your name goes into a nationwide registry and if you ever match someone in need — there's a 1-in-10,000 chance, Brown says — you get the opportunity to save a life.
