Sisters Escape From Moving Car During Carjacking: Police

Their mother left them in the car while she went inside a deli Wednesday night, Nassau Police say.

ROOSEVELT, NY - Police are seeking a person who stole a car while two children were sleeping in the backseat in Roosevelt on Wednesday night, according to Nassau Police.

After pulling up in front of the Midway Deli on 124 Nassau Road, a 33-year-old mother, whose 17-year-old and 6-year-old daughters were sleeping in the backseat, exited the running car to go into the deli at about 11:10 p.m., police said.

The woman called 911 after leaving the store and seeing that the car was no longer there, police said.

When the children awoke, they realized that the person driving the car was not their mother and they were able to get out of the car in Freeport when it slowed down, police said.

As a result of exiting the moving car, both girls suffered minor bruising. The girls flagged down a passing driver, who drove the sisters home, police said.

The stolen car was eventually found unoccupied in the back of 137 Merrick Road in Freeport, police said.

The sisters, who were transported to a local hospital for treatment and evaluation, were unable to describe the person who was driving the car, police said.
