Adelphi University Employees Volunteer at Local Farm
Produce from farm goes to help people in need on Long Island
On Saturday August 15th, more than 20 Adelphi University employees and their families spent a day harvesting fresh local produce for our hungry neighbors on Long Island at Bethel Hobbs Community Farm. As “National Farmers Market Week” comes to a close, it is still vitally important to appreciate the services that farmers and farmers markets provide to the community. Volunteers planted vegetables, weeded the fields, and harvested.
Bethel Hobbs Community Farm provides fresh, nutritious and free local produce to the needy through a network of local food pantries and food programs. Since 2011, Adelphi has volunteered at Hobbs Farm and given back to the community to bring awareness to food production and the issue of hunger on Long Island. Employees have also supported homeless and food distribution charities such as Island Harvest and tackled sustainable solutions to reduce its impact on the environment by volunteering at Grossman’s Farm & Shellfish Restoration.
Bethel Hobbs Community Farm sits on 11 acres of farmland in Centereach, Long Island. Volunteers aid in the farm field operation and last season 30,000 pounds of vegetables ranging from garlic and onions to eggplant, squash and sweet potatoes were harvested and distributed to food pantries.
