You could stand on a corner and look around until a restaurant sign draws you in. But we've got a better idea. Each week, Garden City Patch picks a great restaurant either in town or nearby that is worth checking out. Here’s this week's choice:
Waterzooi Belgian Bistro: If you like mussels, you’ll love Waterzooi. This trendy Belgian bistro claims to have served more than 2.5 million pounds of mussels since opening its doors on Franklin Avenue. If you want to chow down, try Waterzooi’s Moules Pots. They are enormous and can be shared by two. The mussels come with French fries served with mayonnaise, just like in Europe. There are more than a dozen Moules Pots, including the Homard (creamy lobster sauce and scallions) for $29; Lucifer (Buffalo-style crumbled blue cheese, celery and carrots) for $23; or Fondue Moules (fontina, leeks, beer and Belgian farmers ham) for $28.
Waterzooi prides itself on cutting-edge food, and the entrees do not disappoint. One treat is the Carbonade Flamande (marinated beef stewed in Belgian brown ale with carmelized apples and prunes, served with frites), for $19. A favorite side, naturally, is the frites & mayo for $4.

Waterzooi is home to an energetic happy hour crowd that starts arriving at 5 p.m. to take in the exotic beers and ales ($6-$16). Waterzooi has its own “Bier Menu,” featuring more than 130 beers and ales. For dessert, try the Belgian waffles. 850 Franklin Avenue. 516-877-2177.
