Firefighters use hydraulic tools to free driver from the wreckage Friday in Garden City.
A man was injured Friday afternoon in Garden City after he drove through a temporary police barricade and smashed into a fire truck that was part of a funeral detail.
Police had closed off the intersection of Stewart Avenue and New Hyde Park Road so a funeral possession could proceed to their destination, but a small sedan, traveling southbound on New Hyde Park Road, passed through the closure. It struck a police officer on a motorcycle, and then crashed into the front of the fire engine.
Firefighters had to use hydraulic tools to free the man from the wreckage of his automobile. The police officer suffered only minor injuries. The driver was transported to a nearby hospital by Nassau County EMS ambulance.
