Duo Fled Officers When Caught Breaking Into Cars: Police

Police say the two had drugs and alcohol on them, as well as other items stolen from nearby gas stations.

Two Nassau teens were arrested on Thursday after police say they caught them breaking into cars in Hempstead.

According to police, a call came in Thursday night for a string of thefts from cars on Spruce Street and Hempstead Avenue in Hempstead. When officers arrived, police say they saw two men who fit the description from the caller walking on Spruce Street and looking into cars. When the officers approached, police say the two fled on foot, damaging a fence in the process. The two -- Osarogie Aibangbee, 18, of Baldwin, and John Villatoro, 18, of Hempstead -- were arrested a short time later.

Police say that the two were driving in a stolen red pickup truck that was found at an Exxon gas station, located at 820 Hempstead Ave.

Police say Aibangbee was in possession of alcohol that was stolen from the Exxon station earlier in the day. He also had a can of pepper spray and two lighters which were stolen from a BP gas station in Hempstead, police said. He was charged with fourth-degree larceny, two counts of petty larceny, to counts of fifth-degree criminal possession of stolen property, petty larceny (attempt) and possession of noxious materials.

Villatoro had marijuana on him, police said. He was charged with fourth-degree criminal mischief, petty larceny (attempt) and unlawful possession of marijuana.

They are both scheduled to be arraigned in First District Court in Hempstead on Friday.
