Duo Indicted For 2018 Nassau Murder
Authorities say they approached a man on the street and shot him multiple times in broad daylight.

Two men were indicted in recent days for the murder of man who was standing on a street in Hempstead last October.
Jamik Q. Cannon, 26, of Linden Place, Hempstead, and Brian Marshall-Gibson, 23, of Kingston Avenue, South Floral Park, were both indicted on charges of second-degree murder, attempted second-degree murder, first-degree assault and two counts each of second-degree criminal possession of a weapon. They are both due back in court on Jan. 28. If convicted of the top charge, they could each face 25 years to life in prison.
“The victim and his friend were simply standing outside in broad daylight when the defendants allegedly approached with two guns and mercilessly shot them,” said Nassau County District Attorney Madeline Singas. “The scourge of gun violence has impacted too many families in Nassau County and my office is committed to removing illegal guns from our streets.”

According to Singas, on Oct. 19, 2018, just before 11 a.m., Demetrius Winfield was standing with a friend, a local cab driver on a break, in front of a home on Wellesley Street in Hempstead. Cannon and Marshall-Gibson approached the two, Singas said, and shot them.
Winfield was shot in the face, chest and groin and was pronounced dead shortly afterward at Winthrop Hospital. His friend was shot in the leg and is recovering.

Singas said that Winfield was targeted. He and Cannon knew each other and allegedly got into an argument days before at a gas station.
Cannon and Marshall-Gibson were arrested on Dec. 11.
This was not Cannon's first brush with the law. In 2016, he was arrested after a store owner shot him while he was attempting to drive away after shoplifting from the store, police said. The owner had followed Cannon and two others out of the store, police said, and tried to stop them as Cannon drove away. He reached into the driver's side window, and Cannon began to drive in reverse, dragging the owner.
Fearing for his life, the owner fired his gun, which he was licensed to carry, and struck Cannon in the shoulder.
