"Youth Activism and the Climate Justice Movement" Upcoming Forum at Garden City Community Church

Green Umbrella environmental organizers and Cornell University students, K.C. Alvey and Reed Steberger, are part of a growing grassroots movement for clean, renewable energy.

Residents of all ages are invited to hear Alvey and Steberger speak at the Garden City Community Church Forum on Sunday, January 8th at 9am. There are no reservations and the event is free.

The two will highlight how the process of hydraulic fracturing ("fracking") for natural gas threatens the health, environment, and local economies of communities across New York State. They will discuss how communities are fighting back against dangerous forms of fossil fuel extraction (fracking and tar sands oil) and are working to create thriving, just and sustainable economies based on clean energy, green jobs, and local food.

In particular, Alvey and Steberger will focus on how young people are driving the climate justice movement forward around the country in a new surge of youth activism against corporate greed, which is part of a larger movement to reclaim democracy, embodied by the Occupy Movement.

Discussion will follow about the important ways religious communities can help in this struggle to create a just and sustainable future.
