Garden City Ranked 13th Safest Community in the Nation
Commissioner Ken Jackson said he was deeply honored upon receiving the news.

The Village of Garden City is the safest community on Long Island and the thirteenth safest in the United States, according to a 2019 report published by Safewise.
Port Washington and the City of Glen Cove were the only other Long Island communities to make the list, ranking 71 and 83 respectively.
Trustee Mark Hyer, an appointed member of the Board of Police Commissioners, praised the dedicated work of Commissioner Ken Jackson and the Village’s police force. “This is a testament to all that they do,” he said.

The 100 cities that made the list represent 18 states and every region, according to the report, and the Northeast dominates with 70 percent of the country’s safest cities. To identify the safest cities across the state, Safewise reviewed FBI crime report statistics and population data and based the evaluation on the number of reported violent crimes (aggravated assault, murder, rape and robbery) in each city.
This year, Safewise also raised the population threshold and added an extra layer of data with its State of Safety report, a study that explores what people in every state are most worried about when it comes to crime and safety.

Safewise calculated the rate of crimes per 1,000 people in each city to directly compare the likelihood of these crimes occurring in cities with vastly different populations. The safest cities boast an average violent crime rate of 0.20 incidents per 1,000 people - compared to the national average of 4.49.
“I was deeply honored when advised that Garden City achieved the ranking as the 13th safest city in America. I would like to thank the members of the Garden City Police Department for their diligence and hard work as well as the Village Board for their support of the Department’s operations and programs. The members of the Garden City Police Department are committed to maintaining safety within the Village,” Commissioner Jackson said.
