Lady Trojans Fall in County Finals

Garden City loses championship game for first time in nine years.

The Lady Trojans showed a lot of fight after falling behind against Manhasset in Wednesday's Class B Nassau County Championship, but it wasn't enough, as Garden City fell to the Indians 14-8.

"We just didn't execute when we had the chances," Garden City Coach Diane Chapman said. "That's not taking anything away from the game that Manhasset played. They were excellent."

The Trojans struck first, as Tara DAngelo scored just 30 seconds in, but the Indians countered with the next five markers.

"The sky's the limit for us," Sarah Phillips, who scored thrice for Manhasset. "We knew Garden City was our biggest competition, so now we're looking to get to states."

The Indians controlled the face-offs and won the turnover battles, which helped keep the ball out of their defensive zone.

After falling behind 5-1, DAngelo scored her second of the game, but less than two minutes later, Manhasset answered once again. It was 7-3 at half.

The Indians struck first in the second half, as Phillips scored her second of the game. Garden City scored the next two to cut the deficit to 8-5, but that's the closest they'd come as the Indians reeled off three straight, and eventually won 14-8.

"We had a great season," Chapman said. "We lost two games to excellent teams. We have a lot to be proud of, and we have a lot to look forward to in the future."

The loss breaks an eight-year streak in which the Trojans won the Nassau County Championship.

Goal scorers for Garden City included: DAngelo (3), Haley O'Hanlon (1), Krista Dampman (2), Jacqueline Jahelka (1) and Kerry Defliese (1).

Up next for the Indians is the Long Island Class B Championship, which will be held on Sunday at 3:30 p.m. at Adelphi University. Their opponent has not been revealed.
