Garden City Girls Soccer Wins Long Island Championship
Lauren Miesemer buried the golden goal with only 2:02 left in the match against a stubborn Sayville team.
Flashback to Nov. 13, 2010 when Garden City battled Sayville for the Long Island championship and the game goes to penalty kicks with the Trojans coming out on top.
Four years later Coach Mike Heedles' Lady Trojans found themselves playing against Sayville again for a chance to represent Long Island in the state championship in Cortland. The Garden City girls made the alumni proud by coming away with a 1-0 victory in the second sudden death overtime period.
The winning "golden" goal came with 2:02 left in the match off the foot of Lauren Miesemer, making sure that the game wouldn't go to penalty kicks.
Miesemer beat the defense to the ball and finished off a beautiful cross that was sent across by senior Katherine Malhame from the left corner. Malhame is one of two Trojans, Haley O'Hanlon is the other, that were on the 2010 state championship team as freshmen.
The Trojans' defense, led by Kerri DeFliese, shut down Sayville's potent scorer, along with Deanna DiPierro, Katherine Galzerano and the Seel sisters, Collette and Megan. Add the midfield play of O'Hanlon, Malhame and senior Caroline Beaty and you had a game where Garden City dominated time of possession.
The girls head to the state semifinals in Cortland on Friday with a chance to repeat the magical run of the 2010 team.
