Man Attacked And Injured Detectives During Arrest: Nassau Police

Police say the man was acting suspiciously and had crack-cocaine on him, but he fought back when officers tried to arrest him.

A homeless man was arrested by Nassau Police on Sunday after they say he assaulted two officers who were trying to arrest him for drugs.

According to police, Narcotics Squad detectives were on patrol in Hempstead at 11 p.m. on Sunday when they saw, Neal Morris, 32, acting suspiciously in an area known for drug activities. Police say Morris got into a waiting taxi, which drove away, so the officers pulled the car over.

Police say that Morris was holding crack-cocaine when the officers pulled the cab over. As the detectives attempted to arrest him, police say that Morris resisted and tried to running away, injuring both detectives in the process. They managed to subdue him and place him under arrest. Both detectives were taken to a hospital for treatment of their injuries.

Morris was charged with two counts of second-degree assault with the intent to cause physical injury to an officer, third-degree assault, resisting arrest and seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance. He is scheduled to be arraigned on Monday in First District Court in Hempstead.
