NASSAU COUNTY, NY — A South Floral Park man was sentenced to 20 years to life in prison, as well as five years post-release supervision, for his part in a murder that occurred in Hempstead in broad daylight in 2018.

Brian Marshall-Gibson, 25, pleaded guilty on April 29 to second-degree murder, second-degree attempted murder and second-degree criminal possession of a weapon.

“A young man is dead because of a senseless act of gun violence to settle a score,” said Nassau County District Attorney Madeline Singas. “We hope this sentence helps the family and friends of Demetrius Winfield in the grieving process as they continue to mourn his tragic loss.”

According to Singas, at 10:54 a.m. on Oct. 18, 2018, Demetrius Winfield was with a friend, a cab driver who was on a break, in front of a home on Wellesley Street in Hempstead when they were shot by Marshall-Gibson and his accomplice, Jamik Cannon.

Winfield was shot in the face, chest and groin, and was pronounced dead shortly later at NYU Winthrop Hospital. His friend was shot in the leg and is recovering.

Singas said that Winfield knew Cannon, and the two had gotten into an argument several days before at a gas station.
