Nassau Teacher Charged With Stealing From District: Police

Police say she allegedly resold computers that should have gone to the district.

A teacher from Hempstead High School was arrested by the NYPD on Tuesday and charged with grand larceny for the alleged theft and resale of more than $140,000 in computers that were taken from the district.

Theresa Cucina, 55, of Long Beach, was arrested at the school Tuesday, Newsday reported. According to Newsday, Cucina placed orders on behalf of the district for $140,450 worth of tablet and laptop computers. But the computers went to her instead, police say, and then she resold them.

Cucina has been with the district for five years.

"There's more than enough evidence of involvement and of actual payments being made and her sending computers which were addressed to Hempstead Public Schools," Superintendent Shimon Waronker told News12. "We're making sure we have a brighter tomorrow for our children…The money needs to start going to the kids. It can't go to people's pocketbooks."
