GCBGC Helping Prepare Teens for the Job Market

Glen Cove Boys & Girls Club invites teens ages 16 and above to participate in the Club's Summer Youth Employment program.

The SYE Program is designed to help and prepare teens to understand the job market, undertake the application process and improve their interview and presentation skills to better meet the requirements and expectations of employment opportunities.

The program, led by the GCBGC Teen Program Director Jennifer Gorman and board member Christiane Traxler Leonardis, will consist of two sets of a series of five workshops. The first session will take place on March 12, March 14, March 19, March 21 and March 26 from 7pm – 8pm. Second session will take place on April 2, April 4, April 9, April 11 and April 16, also from 7pm – 8pm. Each mandatory workshop will focus on different aspects of career development from preparing for college to fine tuning job searching techniques and interviewing skills to learning how to manage finances. Guest speakers will conduct financial literacy class, presentations and feedback and tips on career development.

After completion of the SYE workshops, teens will have the opportunity to apply for the Club’s Summer Program paid group leader positions which will be available July 8 to August 16. To qualify for the paid group leader positions, teens must be 16 years of age, on free or reduced lunch or on public assistance, have working papers, a birth certificate, and a social security card and have attended all five workshops.

Program participant Emily Escobar, 17, credits the SYE workshops with influencing her goal of becoming a school teacher. “The Club’s Summer Youth Employment sessions, practice interviews and team building exercises really helped boost my confidence and abilities. My time management and communication skills have greatly improved and will be very helpful in my career path of becoming a teacher.”

"In today's competitive job market, it's crucial for our Club teens to have the tools they need to succeed. Learning how and where to find a job, what to do on an interview and how to write a resume are just some of the topics we cover. The program provides a way to gain real-world experience through the job search process, while adding skills and hopefully, employment,” said Ms. Gorman.
