Glen Cove Boys & Girls Club Awards Scholarships

Glen Cove Boys & Girls Club is pleased to announce their 2019 recipients.

Mindy Morales was awarded the Club’s Louis M. Sanford Scholarship while Natalie Corella received the Glen Cove Boys & Girls Club Scholarship and the 2019 Glen Cove Medical Board Scholarship.

Mindy, 18, is the recipient one of the Club’s most honorable scholarships named for past Glen Cove Boys & Girls Club Executive Director Louis M. Sanford. Louis M. Sanford served the community and the Boys & Girls Club for more than 30 years. When Mindy first joined the Club at the age of nine, she could barely speak English and was very shy. She credits the Club and staff for helping her improve her language skills and completing her homework assignments. She became a model student and it wasn’t long before Mindy was excelling in school and participating in many of the Club’s leadership building programs including a Job Shadowing project through Northwell Glen Cove Hospital. The project enabled members to spend a day of their spring break participating in a Shadow Day at the Hospital where they paired with healthcare professionals to get a first-hand look at a variety of careers in the field. It proved to be a galvanizing experience for Mindy who always loved biology and science, cementing her intention of pursuing a career in medicine as either an OBGYN or a trauma surgeon. “I am so grateful to the Club for this Scholarship. It will really help me with my education.” Mindy will be attending SUNY Old Westbury in September. While she is staying close to home for her undergraduate degree she hopes to attend Medical School in Florida and is looking forward to the next few chapters of her academic life.

Natalie Corella, 18, is also grateful to the Club for recognizing her with the Glen Cove Boys & Girls Club Scholarship, awarded to a current Club member who demonstrates achievement in our three priority areas: academic success, good character and citizenship and a healthy lifestyle. Natalie first joined the Club through the Summer Youth Employment Program designed to help and prepare teens to understand the job market, undertake the application process and improve their interview and presentation skills to better meet the requirements and expectations of employment opportunities. After completing the workshops, Natalie secured a position at the Club as a Summer Program Group leader. Her experience at the Club and working with the kids has helped her overcome her shyness and become more outgoing. Natalie’s interest also leans towards the sciences. She will be attending NYIT in the Fall where she plans on pursing a degree in Pre-Med with an eventual goal of becoming a Family Physician. “I am so honored to receive this Scholarship and my parents are very proud of me too,” said Natalie, who puts a great deal of emphasis on the value of education. Natalie is also an avid tennis player who is currently on her school’s varsity team. She plans on joining the NYIT Tennis team. When not focused on school, sports and work, Natalie loves to bake and often surprises her group of kids with cupcakes and cookies made from scratch.
