Glen Cove Boys & Girls Club Youth of the Month True Role Models
Tyler S. and Kahlil F. have been named the YOM for April.

Leadership skills are very important at Glen Cove Boys & Girls Club and in the month of April, it was these qualities that earned Tyler S. and Kahlil F. their Youth of the Month title.
Junior YOM, Tyler S., is in the sixth grade but at the tender age of 12, he is very mature, considerate and centered. Tyler’s favorite subject is math and he enjoys all sports but especially basketball, soccer and football. He has been a member for a year and attends the Club everyday where he participates in a multitude of programs. He loves to play basketball in ‘Donny’s Court’ and when not playing a sport, he opts for the Technology Lab where he can hone his computer skills and play video games. As one of the senior members of the Junior group, he is a fine role model and can often be found helping staff pass out the Club’s healthy meals and snacks or assist with after meal clean-up and other related efforts. Tyler gets along very well with his peers and is highly respected among his group. “I really like coming to the Club and have made a lot of friends here," said Tyler of his experience.
Senior YOM, Kahlil F., 16, is also an avid sportsman. His game of choice is basketball and he is a member of the AAU (Amateur Athletic Union) an organization whose goal is to advance the development of youth sports and physical fitness programs. Kahlil’s dream is to play for the NBA and has set his sights on playing college basketball for either Duke, Villanova or Kentucky. His favorite subjects are math and science. He is a relatively new member to the Club having joined six months ago. “My mother enrolled me in the Club because she wanted to keep me safe, off the streets and out of trouble,” said Kahlil. “The Club has been great and I really like coming here,” he added. The one thing that has really surprised Kahlil about his experience is the influence he has on the younger members and how much that encourages him to be more positive and a better role model. He finds himself becoming more aware of bullying and stepping up to help a child or a peer and stop any situations before they become unmanageable. Kahlil has participated in the Club’s Summer Youth Employment Program. He currently volunteers and helps out at the Club but is looking to working at the Club in the near future.
