Glen Cove Students Celebrate Legacy of Martin Luther King

Students at Gribbin School celebrated the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. during a heartfelt assembly on Jan. 13.

The event began with kindergartners singing, “Freedom Let it Ring,” led by kindergarten teacher Irena Kamola on accordion. It continued with first-grade students sharing biographical information about Dr. King’s life and work. First-graders also recited the poem “Dream,” while they held up painted letters that spelled out the word dream. Members of the school’s Character Club shared characteristics they believed Dr. King exhibited, such as honesty, patience and being a great leader. Second-graders also performed, delivering an outstanding rendition of “It’s In Every One of Us.”

Students from Cynthia Van Ommeren’s class shared quotes from different speeches by Dr. King. The moving assembly concluded with Principal Francine Santoro leading the entire student body in a peace pledge. The children then sang “We Shall Overcome” as they exited the school’s multipurpose room.
