Highland Games Chair Weighs in on Scottish Independence

Millions of Scottish citizens voted Thursday on whether or not their country would become an independent nation or remain a part of the United Kingdom.

In the United States, Long Islanders joined other Americans with roots in Scotland and weighed in on the controversy that has been debated for centuries.

“We believe the people of Scotland deserve to choose there own destiny,” said Andrew McInnes. “Many Scots have demanded there freedom from Great Britain for centuries but after three hundred years they are so interconnected it will require a great commitment to change to independence.

McInnes, of Mineola, is the chief and chairman of the Long Island Scottish Festival and Highland Games. The celebration is held every August at Old Wesbury Gardens and draws thousands from around the region to celebrate Scottish Culture.

“Many Scots have demanded their freedom from Great Britain for centuries” said McInnes, who is also head of Clan MacDuff. “but after three hundred years, they are so interconnected it will require a great commitment to change to independence.”

Overall, McInnes believes that no matter what Scotland chooses, it is important that they had a say.

“We support the Scottish people no matter what they choose. If the Scots were to be controlled for 10,000 years there desire to be free will never change.”
