Police: Glen Cove Man Attempted to Break Into ATM With Sledgehammer
The suspect was arrested after he locked himself in an apartment for about 14 hours Tuesday, police said.
A Glen Cove man was arrested after he attempted to break into an ATM machine using a sledgehammer and then locked himself inside an apartment for several hours on Tuesday, police said.
According to authorities, Daniel Newton, 51, and an unidentified man attempted to use a sledgehammer to break into a Bank Of America ATM machine, at 202 Glen Cove Ave., around 12:10 a.m.
Officer Christopher Paolillo arrived to the scene and saw two men hiding in nearby bushes. One man dropped a sledgehammer and the men ran off in different directions when the officer approached them.

Paolillo chased one suspect down Pearl Street, across Sea Cliff Avenue, onto Glen Cove Avenue.
The suspect, identified as Newton, ran into the third floor of a building at 188 Glen Cove Ave. and locked himself in one of the apartments, police said.

Officers surrounded the building for about 14 hours until Newton came out of the apartment and was taken into custody.
Newton was charged with third degree attempted grand larceny and third degree criminal mischief.
“Officer Christopher Paolillo’s actions on the early morning hours should be commended, he confronted both defendant’s and chased one into a darkened building up three flights of stairs without regard for his safety,” Det. Lt. John Nagle said.
