SAFE Glen Cove Coalition: Red Ribbon Week

SAFE kicked off National Red Ribbon Week October 25 within the Glen Cove School District and Glen Cove Youth Bureau's After 3 program.

SAFE kicked off National Red Ribbon Week (RRW) on October 25th within the Glen Cove School District and Glen Cove Youth Bureau's After 3 program. Red Ribbon Week is known as a national drug awareness campaign that was created in 1985 that aims to address the importance of substance abuse prevention in all school districts and communities. Given the continued issue of our nation’s Opioid Epidemic, this week’s celebration of living a healthy drug free lifestyle is most significant. This year’s RRW theme is “Drug Free Looks Like Me.”.

The ongoing partnership with the Glen Cove School District allowed SAFE and the Glen Cove Youth Bureau to continue to educate the students on this important event, as well as continuing to educate on substance abuse prevention and making healthy choices. Every year, the Glen Cove Police Department also partners with SAFE to educate our community & youth during Red Ribbon Week of the importance to stay drug-free.

Sargent Bifone created a powerpoint for elementary and middle school students to watch in their classes. The powerpoints contained a variety of information on what RRW is about, what drugs are, what does peer pressure look like, how to say no to drugs, and best ways to keep healthy. As each powerpoint was geared toward the appropriate age groups for each school level, the students also learned more about this event throughout the week in their classes.
