Great Neck South High Ranked Among Nation’s Best

Washington Post releases list of 'Most Challenging High Schools.'

Great Neck South High School has achieved a national ranking of No. 227 and a state ranking of No. 15 in New York among a list of the nation’s “Most Challenging High Schools” published by the Washington Post.

A total of 1,933 high schools were ranked throughout the nation on an index the Washington Post determined using a ratio of graduating high school seniors to the number of Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate and Advanced International Certificate of Education tests given in a single year. The rankings also take into consideration the number of families that qualify for lunch subsidies and the percentage of graduates who passed one or more college-level exams during their high school careers.

According to the report, South High had a graduation rate of 98.8 percent with 88 percent of its recent graduates attending 4-year colleges.

The school dropped two spots from its state position in 2012, and 56 spots nationally.

Approximately 9 percent of the 22,000 U.S. public high schools qualified for a ranking.
