Man's Attempt To Re-Enter Roadway Leads To Fatal Collision: Cops

A man who was attempting to drive onto the road from the shoulder was killed in the collision, police said. The other driver was injured.

GREAT NECK, NY — A man was killed in a car collision in Great Neck on Monday, July 22 at 3:08 p.m., and Nassau County Homicide Squad detectives are investigating.

The man, 58, who was driving a 2013 Chevrolet Sonic, was facing eastbound on the shoulder area of Grace Avenue near Weigt Court and tried to enter the travel portion of the road, police said. While he was making an apparent U-turn, he was hit by an eastbound 2019 Volkswagon Tiguan being driven by a 29-year-old man, police said.

The 58-year-old suffered multiple trauma injuries and was transported to an area hospital, police said. He was later pronounced dead by a staff physician.

The 29-year-old suffered non-life threatening injuries and was also brought to the hospital for treatment.

Both cars were removed from the road for brake and safety checks. The name of the man who died was withheld by police so they could notify family. The investigation into the collision is ongoing.
