Canning the Competition, A Food Drive Challenge

Towns across Long Island will compete to see who is most charitable this summer.

Which Long Island town is most charitable? That is the question being put to the test this summer in the Island Harvest "Make A Splash" Food Drive Challenge.

Huntington Town Councilwoman Susan Berland and Island Harvest, Long Island's largest hunger relief organization, came together Friday morning at the  for a press conference to announce the Town of Huntington’s participation in the competition.

“Make A Splash” is an island-wide race between municipal swimming pools to see which town can collect the most donated food. The food drive will run through Aug. 7 at the pool.

Residents are invited to bring down non-perishable food items to the pool to be collected by Island Harvest to assist in their rescue operations.

Berland announced the Town’s participation in the challenge with Island Harvest representative Doreen Principe, Matt Naples, manager of Dix Hills Park and campers from the Town of Huntington’s Adventure Camp.

“It is a pleasure to join Island Harvest this morning to announce the Town of Huntington’s participation in the Make A Splash Food Drive Challenge,” Berland said. “The fight against hunger on Long Island is far from over.  This event reminds us that it is just as important to collect food for the hungry in the summer as it is in November and December.  

The top three pools that collect the most food and funds will be honored with a special Awards Ceremony and be recognized on the front page of the Island Harvest website and newsletter.

Suggested canned and non-perishable items include:

canned vegetables, meats, fish, fruits, soups, sauces, pasta, cereals, dry milk, almond or soy milk, baby formula, spices, coffee, tea, personal care items, nutritional beverages (ex. Boost or Ensure) and personal hygiene items.
