Melville Firefighter Injured Battling Easter Sunday Brush Fire

It was the third brush fire​ to occur in Melville over the past week.

A Melville firefighter was hospitalized for an injury sustained while battling an Easter Sunday brush fire, which was the third brush fire to occur in Melville over the past week.

According to fire officials, the Melville Fire Department responded to the fire that involved a 400 by 100-foot wooded area, about the size of an acre, on Burrs Lane around noon. The fire came within a few feet of a house and deck and involved part of the Surburban Water Gardens nursery and adjoining property at the southern end of Burrs Lane.

Firefighters contained the blaze within 45 minutes and brought the fire under control at 1:30 p.m. While fighting the blaze, a Melville firefighter suffered a shoulder injury and was transported to Huntington Hospital. He is in stable condition.

Sixty firefighters using ten trucks battled the blaze. All units were under the command of Melville Fire Chief Jason Bernfeld and assistantcChiefs Chris Nolan and David Kaplan.

Suffolk Police Aviation assisted with a helicopter to provide the chiefs with aerial fire condition reports while the Suffolk County Fire Rescue coordinators provided assistance.
