Former Chelsea Art Gallery Opens New Harlem Location in September

The Elizabeth Dee Gallery will host the first exhibition in its new location starting Sept. 24.

HARLEM, NY — Another art gallery is picking up its Chelsea roots in order to move to Harlem. The Elizabeth Dee gallery will open its new location on Fifth Avenue between 125th and 126th streets in September.

The gallery's website now officially lists its address as the Harlem location and its first show, appropriately named "First Exhibition," will open Sept. 24 and run through Oct. 15.

The gallery has featured artists such as Mac Adams, John Giorno, Leo Gabin, Julia Wachtel among many others. The Elizabeth Dee gallery had been a Chelsea staple for more than a decade before deciding to move to Harlem.

"There's been a conversation in New York for at least the last five years about where galleries will be able to move, to decentralize from Chelsea," Dee, who has lived in Harlem for four years, told The New York Times in February. "And I think Harlem is such a dynamic place."

The Robert Miller Gallery, formerly located at West 26th Street, moved to a temporary location on the Upper East Side after closing its Chelsea location in late July. They had been in Chelsea for 15 years and are still looking for a permanent location.
