DJ Jinx Paul Funeral Services Planned, NYC Community Invited

HARLEM, NY — Funeral services have been planned for Harlem DJ Jean Paul Guerrero, also known as Jinx Paul, who was killed Monday morning by a hit-and-run driver in East New York.

The services will be held in Washington Heights' Ortiz Funeral Home located on Broadway between West 189th and 190th streets, according to a press release. The funeral will start at 4 p.m. and is expected to last until 9 p.m. Spanish Broadcasting System and La Mega 97.9, the radio station Guerrero DJed for, has invited "the entire New York community to attend this funeral to our beloved family member and colleague."

Guerrero was killed Monday morning around 4 a.m. when he was crossing the intersection of Jamaica and Sheffield avenues in the East New York section of Brooklyn, NYPD Chief of Transportation Thomas Chan said at a Tuesday press conference. Guerrero had just finished DJing an event at a nearby nightclub and was crossing the street to get into a cab to take him home.

A 27-year-old man named Kevin Ozoria surrendered to police Friday morning at the 75th police precinct in East New York, an NYPD spokesman told Patch. Ozoria told police he was driving the car that hit Guerrero and that he took the car to a body shop in Brooklyn, the NYPD spokesman said.

At Tuesday's press conference elected officials and Guerrero's colleagues at La Mega 97.9 called on the hit-and-run driver to turn themselves in. City Councilman Ydanis Rodriguez described the driver's decision to leave the scene of the accident as "cowardly," and called on the closing of loopholes that punish hit-and-run drivers less severely than drunk drivers.

Several DJs at La Mega 97.9 FM stood in front of Guerrero's Amsterdam Avenue apartment Tuesday to remember their friend and colleague. Eric Garcia, the General Manager of La Mega, said that people from Spanish-speaking countries around the world had been sending their condolences to the station.

"He was a man who was filled with humbleness and happiness," Garcia said Tuesday. "He was the soul of our radio station beloved by everybody. I still can't get over the amount of sympathy and support that we've gotten from everyone."

Crimestoppers is offering a $2,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and La Mega 97.9 is offering a $1,000 reward.
