A Harlem Block Has Been Infested With Mischievous Raccoons: Report

The raccoons have scared residents and broken into homes on West 121st Street in Harlem.

HARLEM, NY — Some unwelcome guests are causing a stir on one Harlem block.

West 121st Street between Adam Clayton Powell Jr. and Malxolm X boulevards have been ransacked by a group of raccoons for nearly a month, DNAinfo reported. Several residents told DNAinfo that they have spotted raccoons in an abandoned brownstone at 160 W. 121st St.

Racoons have broken into people's homes, rummaged through backyards, gnawed through insect screens and allegedly devoured the pet turtle of former candidate for mayor Bill Thompson, residents of the block told DNAinfo.

City officials have told the residents that pest control is the responsibility of the landlords and tenants on the block, and have not helped solved the raccoon problem, DNAinfo reported.
