Murderer Guns Down Man At East Harlem Liquor Store, Prosecutors Say

The victim managed to reach a nearby deli to call for help before collapsing moments later, prosecutors said.

EAST HARLEM, NY — A 26-year-old man has been convicted of murder for shooting a 25-year-old man to death outside an East Harlem liquor store in 2022, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg announced Monday.

A New York State Supreme Court jury on Monday found Camby Wilson guilty on all counts, including second-degree murder and two counts of second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, according to the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office. Wilson is scheduled to be sentenced on April 24, Bragg said.

Prosecutors said Wilson shot and killed Shaquell Gainey on Feb. 25, 2022, near East 116th Street and First Avenue.

According to evidence presented at trial, Gainey went to a liquor store in the area around 10:55 p.m. and was leaving after making a purchase when Wilson — who was wearing a hood and face mask — walked by, Bragg said.

Gainey ran back inside the store for safety, prosecutors said, but Wilson pulled out a gun and fired several shots at him before chasing him inside the store and continuing to shoot, Bragg said. One of the bullets struck Gainey in the chest, Bragg said.

Wilson then fled to the nearby Wagner Houses, where prosecutors said he changed his clothing.

Gainey managed to reach a nearby deli before collapsing moments later. He was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead less than an hour after the shooting, Bragg said.

"Camby Wilson callously fired numerous shots at Shaquell Gainey — a Harlemite simply going about his day — with the intent to kill," Bragg said. "This vicious and senseless act of violence tragically took Mr. Gainey’s young life and has caused immeasurable pain for his family."

After the shooting, Wilson fled New York and traveled to Maine, prosecutors said.

While there, he was arrested on a federal gun charge and later sentenced to a 24-month prison term in May 2023. After completing that sentence, he was extradited to New York to face charges in Gainey’s killing, Bragg said.
