NYIT Professor Accused of Placing Camera in Bathroom Found Dead in Harlem Home: Police

A man facing charges for placing a recording device in a bathroom on the NYIT-Old Westbury campus was found dead Thursday night in Harlem.

HARLEM, NY — A New York Institute of Technology professor facing charges for planting a camera in a bathroom at the school's Old Westbury Campus was found dead in his Harlem apartment Thursday night, an NYPD spokesperson told Patch.

Jackie Conrad, 39, was found dead at his apartment on Adam Clayton Powell Boulevard near West 138th Street at about 6 p.m., police said. Conrad was arrested Wednesday, July 13 by the Old Westbury Police Department and was charged with second-degree unlawful surveillance, according to court records.

The medical examiner's office is still investigating Conrad's cause of death, police said.

The Old Westbury Police Department said it responded to a report of a recording device inside a handicap-accessible bathroom, on the third floor of the Kenneth Riland Building, and discovered the device was a pen camera that had the capability of recording. Conrad was a professor in the anatomy department at NYIT.

He was scheduled to appear in court again on July 28.

Any students or staff members at NYIT-Old Westbury who may have used this handicap-accessible bathroom on Wednesday, July 13 from 9 a.m. to noon are encouraged to contact the Old Westbury Police Department.
