San Marco Heads To Skidmore

Harrison's two-sport star Sofie San Marco is heading to Skidmore College where she will join the school's field hockey team.

Sofie San Marco spent her senior year at Harrison as a force on the Husky field hockey and lacrosse teams. Now, the freshman-to-be is heading Skidmore College to play for the school’s field hockey team.

The Skidmore College field hockey team enjoyed one of the best years in the school’s history last season, going 20-2. The Thoroughbreds captured the Liberty League title for the third straight year, advancing to their division's final four.

But the team graduated nine seniors from last year's squad, opening to door for some younger players to contribute.

San Marco found out about Skidmore when a friend visited the school and recommended she take a look. After some research it turned out that school had all of the things she was looking for.

“I loved the field hockey team when I visited and since I'm undecided about my major I thought a small liberal arts school would be the perfect place for me,” San Marco said.

When she sent in her application, San Marco added a sports resume and a highlight DVD to be sent to the school’s field hockey coach, Beth Hallenbeck. This was the first time the school had seen or heard about San Marco’s on-field talent, but she was impressive enough to earn a spot on the team.

“The coach promised that being allowed to try out meant that you were on the team,” San Marco said. “But every player must earn her own playing time.”

With pre-season starting next week, San Marco will have some time to earn her spot before school begins Sept. 7. As a freshman it will be difficult for her to earn time, but after the leadership and athleticism San Marco showed at Harrison she is hopeful to find her way on the field sometime soon.

“I think I'll fit in really well with the team, but my role as an incoming freshman is hard to say,” San Marco said. “I'm going to try my best and see where it lands me.”

San Marco has already spent time with some of her teammates to get to know them before the season begins. She went on an overnight recruiting visit during the fall and spent time with some veterans on the team.

“They all seemed really friendly,” San Marco said. “The whole team keeps in touch over the summer as well so that the season will be more welcoming.”

As the recent Harrison graduate prepares for next chapter of her life, we wish her the best with her new team.
