Question: What's the Strangest Pronounciation of Hauppauge You've Heard?

Do all Long Islanders say it right, or only those with local knowledge.

It's rumored you have to be a Long Islander to know how to properly pronounce Hauppauge. At first glance, it's a town name that can be daunting to outsiders who can't figure out how to get through the middle "auppau" sound.

The word comes from the area's Native American settlers, the Algonquian, translating to "land of sweet waters" or "overflowed land."

Twitter user @BasquiatProtege had one of these run ins yesterday, tweeting she's heard Hauppauge pronounced as "Haw-page" and "how pow gee."
