Dumbo, BK Heights Are Among NYC's Healthiest Neighborhoods: Study

Access to bike rooms and residents' eating patterns put these neighborhoods on a list of the 10 healthiest in the city.

DUMBO, BROOKLYN — Dumbo and Brooklyn Heights are two of the healthiest places to live in the city, a new study found.

Both neighborhoods made their way onto a list of the top 10 healthiest spots to live in New York City, with Dumbo in second place and Brooklyn Heights taking the seventh-place spot. The study — led by experts from StreetEasy and Seamless — used data about apartment buildings access to bike rooms or gyms, the number of restaurants with healthy-food orders and the amount of recreational and wellness options, including doctor's offices, gyms and public space or bike lanes.

In Dumbo, the statistic that stood out to researchers was residents' healthy eating habits.

"Restaurants in Dumbo receive orders for superfoods like bok choy, avocado and green tea 37 percent more than the NYC average," the report found.

For Brooklyn Heights, access to recreation contributed to its healthy status. The neighborhood has 110 residential buildings with bike rooms, which is the highest number of those on the list.

Both neighborhoods added to the study's finding that Brooklyn and Queens seem to be a great option for those looking for a healthy lifestyle. The top four neighborhoods on the list are in those two boroughs.

"Across both boroughs, New Yorkers can find ample park space, bike lanes, and healthy food and living options," the study found.

Nearby Red Hook topped the list of healthiest neighborhoods, mostly for its healthy eaters and access to more bike lanes than almost anywhere else in the city.
