Proposed Renovation Design Unveiled For Pacific Library: See Photos

BROOKLYN, NY — Brooklyn Public Library, Safdie Architects and AYON Studio have unveiled the proposed design for the renovation of Pacific Library, a historic Carnegie library that has served Brooklyn since 1904.

The renovation aims to preserve the landmark building’s historic character while making it fully accessible and creating more than 34% additional space for patrons, including 1,500 square feet of new space. The design was shaped by community feedback gathered by BPL before and after funding for the project was secured.

“We are restoring the library while, at the same time, introducing new elements that will make it more accessible and inviting as a civic space. By adding a garden and solarium, we are enhancing the building and adding new amenities that benefit the community," Moshe Safdie, Founding Partner of Safdie Architects.

Plans call for restoration of the original cone-shaped roof and skylight, as well as restored light wells and a new two-story solarium overlooking a sunken garden to bring more natural light into the building. A new street-level entrance, elevator and accessible restrooms will also be added.

The renovated library will include expanded spaces for children and teens, classrooms, flexible program areas, adult learning space and upgraded reading and gathering areas.

The project will also modernize mechanical and building systems, improve insulation and acoustics, and incorporate energy-efficient upgrades, with the project targeting LEED Gold certification.

Construction is expected to begin in 2027.
