JFK Customs Officer Helped Cocaine Smugglers Pass Through Inspections, Prosecutors Say

Customs officer Fernando Marte faces federal charges for allegedly helping cocaine dealers get through inspections at JFK, prosecutors said.

DOWNTOWN BROOKLYN — A customs officer who allegedly tried to help two cocaine smugglers breeze through John F. Kennedy Airport customs now faces federal charges, authorities announced Wednesday.

Uniformed Customs and Border Protection officer Fernando Marte was on duty when he greeted two smugglers arriving at JFK from the Dominican Republic on Feb. 7, according to Brooklyn federal prosecutors.

Marte then escorted the duo to the baggage claim where they picked up two suitcases loaded with about 45 kilograms of cocaine, prosecutors said.

Marte tried to help the smugglers and their loot through an inspection point, but they were stopped by other Customs and Border Protection officers who opened the bags and found the cocaine, said prosecutors.

Investigators later discovered that Marte has successfully helped at least one other smuggler from the Dominican Republic to pass through John F. Kennedy Airport, according to prosecutors.

Marte was arraigned in Brooklyn federal court Wednesday morning and charged with conspiring to import and importing more than five kilograms of cocaine, the DA said.

Marte faces between 10 years and life in prison if convicted, authorities said, but the New York Daily News reported a plea deal may be underway.

“Law enforcement officers who use their official positions to commit crimes pose a particularly grave threat to our communities,” said Acting U.S. Attorney Bridget Rohde in a statement. “The charges announced today send a message to those who would so betray the public.”

Marte’s attorney was not immediately available to comment.
