Man Drove Drunk With Newborn in the Car in Westbury: Police

Police say they spotted the man driving erratically Sunday night.

A Westbury man faces felony DWI charges after police say he drove drunk with a newborn child in the car Sunday night in Westbury.

According to authorities, officers conducted a traffic stop after observing a 2001 Honda driving erratically southbound on Post Avenue at 11:18 p.m.

Officers determined that the driver, identified as 27-year-old Juan Chimbo, was under the influence of alcohol, police say.

A subsequent investigation revealed one of the passengers in the vehicle was a three-week-old child who police say was in an unrestrained car seat in the rear of the vehicle. Three other adults were also passengers in the car. The child was taken from the scene by family members. No injuries were reported.

Chimbo was placed under arrest and charged with aggravated DWI (Leandra’s Law), endangering the welfare of a child, DWI, DWI (BAC + .08), along with several vehicle and traffic law violations.

He will be arraigned Monday at First District Court in Hempstead.
