Man Possessed Numerous Bogus Checks in Carle Place: Police

The man returned to a musical instrument store to make another fraudulent purchase and was recognized by the store manager, police say.

A Manhattan man who was found to be in possession of numerous fraudulent checks was arrested Monday afternoon after police say he returned to a Carle Place musical instrument store to make another bogus purchase.

According to authorities, Lamont Canteen, 37, made a $2,323.24 purchase with a check, which was later found to be fraudulent, at Sam Ash, located at 385 Old Country Road, on April 21.

Canteen returned to Sam Ash on Monday at 1:41 p.m. and attempted to make another purchase using a bogus check, but he was recognized by the manager who contacted authorities, police say.

Canteen was placed under arrest without incident. He was found to be in possession of numerous fraudulent checks as well as fraudulent identifications to match those checks, police say.

He was charged with 17 counts of second-degree possession of a forged instrument and fourth-degree grand larceny. He will be arraigned Tuesday at First District Court in Hempstead.
