Man Robs, Assaults Cab Driver In Hicksville: Police

The man cut the cab driver's left arm with a gravity knife on Saturday morning, police say.

A man was arrested for robbing a taxi driver and cutting him with a knife on Saturday morning in Hicksville, police say.

According to authorities, Ramel Giggetts, 30, of Copiague, entered a running Centro Taxi cab on Broadway, near East Barclay Street, and demanded that the 41-year-old male driver take him to Massapequa at 4:45 a.m.

Police say the driver refused as his shift was over, causing Giggetts to pull a gold chain off the man's neck. A physical altercation ensued outside the cab, police say. At one point, Giggetts allegedly displayed a utility knife and cut the man's left arm, causing a laceration.

Giggetts then fled on foot with the gold chain, police say.

Authorities responded to the scene and were able to locate Giggetts walking on East Marie Street, police say. He was placed under arrest without incident. The gravity knife was recovered but the gold chain was not, police say.

The cab driver was taken to a nearby hospital by Nassau County Police Ambulance to be treated for his arm injury.

Giggetts was charged with second-degree robbery, second-degree assault and criminal possession of a weapon.

He was arraigned Sunday at First District Court in Hempstead.
